Leonard E. Jones
6.12.1943 - 6.12.2024
Leonard E. Jones passed away unexpectedly and suddenly on his 81st birthday on December 6, 2024. He was a musician with a wide range of experience. Whether at concerts or at home, the double bass was his constant companion, as was the camera later on. He toured 36 countries on four continents and was fortunate enough to work with many well-known and influential musicians.
However, he was most influenced by the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), which he joined shortly after its founding in 1965. Even though he lived in Germany for over 40 years, he kept in touch, set up the website for the AACM New York City Chapter in 2005, and continued to serve as its administrator until recently.
Since the 1960s, his second great passion had been photography. Leonard leaves behind an extensive collection of photographs of people, street scenes, landscapes, architecture, and much more. These include very rare photographs of the AACM's music lessons for children and young people from the organization's early days in Chicago. In addition to stage photos of concerts, which were plentiful thanks to the press and photographers, he found it more interesting to photograph situations with musicians behind the scenes, during rehearsals, on tour, or after concerts.
Since we were unable to maintain Leonard's own website, which he designed himself, for legal reasons, we as a family would like to continue it in a slightly modified form and add to it from time to time in order to keep the memory of Leonard E. Jones alive.
